'Ascending the Morning' is a booklet & CD release published by Singular Publishing, with the CD on the 33Jazz label. It features settings of eight poems by Alice Oswald and is presented with the notation of the songs and the poems, alongside beautiful illustrations by Morris English.
The CD features the recordings of the settings, featuring ALATI - a trio led by Norwich-based trumpeter Chris Dowding, with vocalist Brigitte Beraha and pianist Dave O'Brien. ALATI coalesced into this trio configuration around 3 years ago, and the trio have together explored Chris Dowding's settings in both acoustic and electric contexts of poems by Andrew McMillan and Colin Simms.
However, their first performances as a trio were of these settings of eight poems from earlier collections by Alice Oswald. Since then, they have performed around the UK. Individually, the members of ALATI have worked with trombonist Annie Whitehead and the groups Babelfish and Solstice, along with leading their own projects, such as Dave O'Brien's Porpoise Corpus.
We invite you into this soundworld of Alice Oswald settings, and encourage you to explore your own versions of these songs, with your own groups, or to just try a few notes and see where it takes you...
Andy Robson, Jazzwise -
“The writing and arrangements are very much in service to the text. In that spirit, Dowding’s own horn playing is often restrained, his breath as much part of the accompaniment as the notes he plays, so intimate is the recording.” (see March issue magazine for full review)
